      Program Narrative: This workshop will focus on the demands of treating and supervising the treatment of patients with personality disorders. In the first hour, the presenter will review ten empirically supported angles of vision for understanding individual differences relevant to personality types and disorders, including factors of cultural context, minority status, and other areas of diversity. In the second, she will focus on Kernberg’s borderline “level of severity,” including the DSM category of borderline personality disorder, and provide an integrative overview of conclusions about treatment made by expert clinicians and researchers. Finally, she will consider some “vital signs” that supervisors and consultants can help therapists to monitor in the clinical process to assess whether therapeutic progress is occurring. Although psychodynamically oriented, the presenter will include attention to findings of investigators of other theoretical orientations.

      After this workshop, participants will be able to:

    • 1.     List ten research-based perspectives on individual differences and their respective implications for treatment;
    • 2.     Depict five areas of agreement among experts on severe personality disorders about good clinical practice with patients in this group;
    • 3.     Define two ways of dealing with the possible implications of differences between supervisor and supervisee in areas such as culture, ethnicity, race, age, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, class, ability, and similar potential diversities;
    • 4.     Identify at least five indications of progress toward overall mental health that are distinct from symptom reduction.
