Covid19 Conundrums: Practicing Positive Ethics During a Pandemic

March 5, 2021

9:30-11:00 am

Zoom Webinar

1.5 Continuing Education Credits available

Presenters: Jane Simon, Ph.D., Jayne Schacter, Ph.D. and Priti Shah, Ph.D. of the NJPA Ethics Education and Resource Committee

Program Description: Ethical decision-making can be challenging even during ordinary circumstances. The Covid19 pandemic has presented new challenges to ethical practice, as many psychologists have begun to practice telehealth for the first time and offer pro-bono services. Some wonder how and whether to reach-out to former patients and are unsure how to advertise virtual services. The principles of Positive Ethics remain helpful in sorting out these and other questions. Positive Ethics encourage psychologists to draw not only on the APA ethics code, as well as state laws and regulations, but to also consider the relationship between those rules and how to reach the best outcomes in any given situation. This can be accomplished by focusing on the client’s strengths and looking to reach the highest aspirational level rather than just avoiding negative repercussions.  The role of cultural factors and the psychologist’s own values and beliefs will also be considered.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the foundations of positive ethics

  2. Identify 2 ways to help prevent ethical problems and dilemmas

  3. Explain how to apply these concepts to explore specific ethical dilemmas

  4. Identify three of their own values and beliefs may influence ethical decision-making
