Program Overview: Introduction to Somatic Psychology, including an overview of the history of the “Fight or Flight Response”, the “Mind-Body Connection”, and the “Window of Tolerance” as well as the importance of how Attachment Wounds and Trauma are stored in the Body. Research review will include evidenced based framework for somatic therapy in reducing PTSD symptoms, chronic pain, depression, and anxiety. Experiential tools and clinical applications will include hands-on-practice, in addition to Video Case Study Demonstration.
Veronica A Lenzi, Ph.D.: Veronica A. Lenzi, Ph.D. is a New Jersey licensed Psychologist. She has completed her doctorate in Clinical Psychology with a concentration in Health Psychology from Yeshiva University’s Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York. She is Advanced Certified in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy which is a body-centered trauma-focused therapeutic model grounded in neuroscience and attachment theory. She has developed a private practice working with Individuals, Couples, Families, and Groups. Her work’s emphasis is the dignity and integration of the human person - mind, body, and soul – and helping individuals to develop an awareness of themselves, their relationships, and how they can live open and true to themselves amid their life challenges. Dr. Veronica’s experience includes over 30 years with a balance of clinical work, teaching, and research working in hospital, clinic, and private practice settings with children, adolescents, and adults experiencing a variety of physical and mental health issues such as trauma, cancer, family, relational, and educational difficulties. Her overall goals are to be dedicated to the field of Psychology in each of these areas focusing on how we as human beings develop, function, and interact - and to apply this knowledge toward the development of coping, recovery, and prevention methods contributing to and enhancing the overall health and well-being of individuals and society. Specific areas of interest are Trauma, Health and Wellness, and Spirituality.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:1) Define body-centered psychotherapy and its core principles (e.g., Somaticexperiencing, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy).2) Explain the neurobiological basis for why trauma is “stored” in the bodyand how it affects the nervous system (e.g., the fight or flight response,window of tolerance).3) Apply 3-4 somatic tools (present moment experience, grounding, tacking,orienting) for regulation in clinical settings4) Identify signs of client resistance or dissociation and use pacing/titrationto avoider-traumatization.5) Develop an aware and “embodied” therapist posture to improvetherapeutic alliance and prevent burnout.

Program Overview: Disfigurement can happen to anyone, from multiple causes. The impact of disfigurement has received scant attention in psychology. This presentation, led by a facially different psychologist, will address the social stigma of disfigurement, the burgeoning “Face Equality” movement, and ways psychologists can improve the lives of people with facial difference.
Lise Deguire, Psy. D. Dr. Lise Deguire is a psychologist, author, childhood burn survivor, and author of the multiple award-winning book, Flashback Girl: Lessons on Resilience from a Burn Survivor. Dr. Deguire has appeared on NPR, NBC, ABC, and FOX. She is a TEDx speaker (“SCARRED not Scary”), a national keynote speaker and has presented for The American Psychological Association, the World Burn Congress, The Security and Exchange Commission, and The American Burn Association. Her written work has been featured in Psychology Today, Huffington Post, The Psychotherapy Networker, and Thrive Global. She received two artist residency grants at Craigarden.
